A Girl Called Echo is a series of Own Voices graphic novels that follow a teenage girl’s journey of self discovery, set against the backdrop of key events in Canadian and Métis history. Key themes include identity, empowerment, Métis and Indigenous history, social justice, coming of age, blood memory, hope, and intergenerational trauma and legacy. Katherena Vermette is a Métis writer from Treaty 1 Territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She focuses on the Métis perspective during this historical period. Katherena Vermette is one of the authors in the 2019 graphic novel anthology This Place: 150 Years Retold, which brings the last 150 years to life through Indigenous characters and stunning full-color art. The writers represent a broad spectrum of Indigenous voices, communities and experiences.
